Pending legislation for California veterans can help local San Diego military

Pending legislation for California Veterans – lawmakers in Sacramento are gearing up to pass legislation to help the increasing needs of veterans of both the Afghanistan and Iraq wars. The need comes as more veterans are returning home from the winding down of both wars.

With California being home to the largest population of veterans in the nation nearly 2 million, of which 225,000 live in San Diego, the need is imminent. Dozens of measures have been introduced aimed at helping veterans find jobs, start a business or attend college. Some measures clearly reflect the a sign of the times as they deal with helping veterans keep more of their combat pay from the IRS and benefits for gay veterans discharged under the repealed “Don’t ask, Don’t Tell” law. The measure that’s attracting the most attention is the legislation introduced by Sen. Ted Lieu, D-Torrance SB 661 that places constraints on pickets at military funerals.

The housing legislation being introduced by Assemblywoman Kristin Olsen AB 1592 would greatly benefit the

wounded warriors here in San Diego by permitting local jurisdictions to waive building inspection fees for modifications to make veteran homes more handicap accessible. Requiring banks to attempt a loan modification before foreclosure is a timely legislation being introduced by Assemblyman John Perez, D-Los Angeles AB 2528.

Many of the jobs/business legislation being introduced relate to making professional licensing for jobs an easier process to enable veterans and their spouses to gain employment and start businesses. Assemblywoman Toni Atkins, D-San Diego is sponsoring AB 1588 to waive professional licensing fees and related continuing education requirements for military reservists.

All these pending pieces of legislation while they come as a cost to the state that’s struggling with budget issues, these measures are much needed to help the quality of life for our men and women returning from both wars.
